There are some pieces of literature that have stood the test of time and have been an all time favourite of the readers across the world. Apart from being very well written, there are some aspects of the work that appeals to the core of human existence. Dorian Gray embraces sensuality and manipulates those around him, while his portrait rots in the attic, turning horrific day by day.

This Russian novel, famous for its themes of justice and guilt, pursues the story of Raskolnikov, a poor student wandering the streets of St. Petersburg, where he randomly commits a murder, without any remorse or guilt. This one could be quite a heavy read as it is layered with multiple philosophical conditions and beliefs, but extremely insightful about the human psyche. 

Jane Austen is famous for expressing acute observations of society and its members and their behaviour in relation class. This story explores the lives of five sisters, especially that of the relationship between Elizabeth Bennet and Mr Dracy. A tale entwined with love, it is bound to capture you in its enchanted world. Far progressive for its time, it questioned societal norms and gender roles as it puts individual happiness forth.
