International Literacy Day Special

Celebrated by UNESCO every year on 8th September since 1967, this day serves as a reminder about the importance of literacy and how it sits at the core of becoming a better society that lives in harmony with each other. This day raises awareness to the fact that literacy is a fundamental human right and hence should be equally accessible to all. Through the expansion of the digital age, all the information one could possibly need is available on the internet. But availability does not necessarily mean accessibility. Where there is a lack of infrastructure to support the education of its citizens, local and traditional practices of storytelling go a long way in boosting literacy.

Storytelling has long been the way of passing down knowledge from generation to generation. The craft of storytelling existed since the dawn of time, whether it be oral, visual or written ways, mankind always relied on the shared knowledge of communities. It enhanced communal relationships and ensured emotional development of the younger generation. After the invention of Gutenberg Press in 1440, books–a traditional storytelling source, began to circulate like a wildfire. As copying manuscripts became mechanical, it ensured vast and cheaper availability of reading material to the common masses. It brought about a revolution in the world and thus began the story of modern publishing and printing.

Literature has always made learning more engaging and memorable, and not just for children. It reflects the culture and history of this world, while developing cognitive skills among children. It helps boost creativity and encourages to push the boundaries of imagination. Literature becomes an empowering tool of expression for those who are often silenced. It transforms one from passive existence to an active life, rich in empathy, expression and creative thinking–becoming a safe space for exploring the complexities of human life. Picking up a book, no matter which genre, is a step towards a better society.

We at The Bombay Circle Press are committed to provide a platform for voices from all walks of life–to bring forth their unique experiences. We celebrate diversity and strive to amplify a range of voices and perspectives through our publications. Inclusivity is at the heart of everything we do, from the stories we curate to the authors we support. The passion for storytelling fuels the dedication to bring captivating narratives to audiences who crave for unique stories. The Bombay Circle Press believes in the transformative power of stories to inspire, entertain, and provoke thought and celebrate the art of storytelling on this International Literacy Day.
